Established in 1865 Trinity Parish Church is Seattle’s oldest Episcopal church. Imagine its first humble beginnings. A small wooden structure stood at Third Avenue and Jefferson Street. This wasn’t just any church. It was a beacon of hope a testament to faith in a burgeoning city. Sadly this first building was lost in the Great Fire of 1889. But the spirit of Trinity persevered.

The congregation relocated to 609 Eighth Avenue. There a new church was built opening in 1892. Architect Henry F Starbuck designed it in the English Gothic Revival style. A fire in 1902 gutted the interior. Only the exterior walls remained. John Graham Sr a prominent Seattle architect rebuilt it. He enlarged the structure adding German stained glass windows and an Italian marble altar. The artistry is breathtaking. Each detail a testament to faith and craftsmanship. The stained-glass windows were crafted by Franz Mayer & Co of Munich. Their intricate designs fill the church with vibrant color. The Carrara marble altar is a masterpiece. Mother of pearl ceramic tile and Venetian gold glass embellish this stunning piece.

Trinity Parish Church has survived much. The 2001 Nisqually earthquake severely damaged the building. Yet the altar reredos and windows survived intact. This resilience reflects the enduring strength of the congregation. The church was painstakingly rebuilt and restored. It reopened in late 2005 thanks to the work of Bassetti Architects. Trinity remains a vital part of Seattle’s history and community.

Today Trinity Parish Church stands as a symbol of resilience faith and architectural beauty. It has played a significant role in Seattle’s social history. Its history of inclusion notably a mixed-race marriage presided over by the Rev. Herbert Gowan in 1909 makes it a landmark. Trinity is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. It stands as a welcoming place of worship and community service. Its red doors a symbol of open arms and hospitality beckon all. Step inside and experience a rich history and vibrant present.
