Hidden within the heart of Condet lies Masjid Jami Al Khairaat a place steeped in history. This isn’t just any mosque. This is Jakarta Timur’s oldest mosque. Its origins trace back to the 16th century. Imagine a time long before towering skyscrapers and bustling traffic. Picture a small humble langgar a modest prayer house built by the hands of Dato’ Kudul and Dato’ Dji’in. These brothers were native Betawi people. They dedicated a portion of their land to create this sacred space.
Masjid Jami Al Khairaat wasn’t always the grand structure it is today. Initially known as Masjid Hutan Condet it was a simple building constructed from nangka wood. Over centuries it grew. It evolved. It served as a refuge for rebels fighting against the Dutch. It became a central point for the spread of Islam. The mosque stands as a silent testament to their faith and perseverance.
Through the years Masjid Jami Al Khairaat has undergone several renovations. Records show significant changes in 1936 1952 1967 and 1988. But many unrecorded renovations shaped the mosque’s current appearance. Today its walls are adorned with green and white ceramics. A large dome and a single minaret crown its roof. Inside a red carpet covers the main prayer area. The mosque can accommodate over 2000 worshippers. The air inside remains surprisingly cool even without air conditioning. Large hanging lamps and smaller lights illuminate the prayer hall. Ceiling fans gently circulate the air.
Even today the mosque remains a vibrant center of faith. Friday prayers are regularly held. Evening recitations are common occurrences. The mosque hosts celebrations for major Islamic holidays like Maulid Nabi Muhammad Isra Mi’raj and Ramadan. Close to the mosque lies a cemetery. Here family members of the founders including Dato’ Kudul and Dato’ Dji’in are buried. Their legacy lives on through this remarkable mosque. Mpok Tini a fourth-generation descendant of the founders actively works to preserve Masjid Jami Al Khairaat. She carries on the family’s commitment to ensuring this historic place of worship endures for future generations. Its significance extends beyond Condet attracting worshippers from nearby areas. Masjid Jami Al Khairaat stands as a powerful symbol of Jakarta’s rich history and enduring faith.
