Is this where the infamous Fort-Monjol once stood? Rue Henri Turot, a seemingly ordinary street today, holds a past shrouded in whispers of poverty and vice. Before it bore the name of renowned journalist and socialist Henri Turot, it was known as Rue Asselin. In the early 20th century, this street bore witness to a side of Paris far removed from the grandeur of the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre. Imagine, if you will, the gaslights casting a dim glow upon cobblestone streets. Rue Asselin, along with its neighbors Rue Pechoin and Rue Monjol, formed a notorious corner of the Combat neighborhood. This area, known as Fort-Monjol, was a hub of desperate poverty, its run-down buildings offering cheap refuge, and even cheaper thrills. Newspaper accounts from the time paint a grim picture of Rue Asselin. “Innumerable ladies in light robes” frequented the street, their presence a testament to the area’s thriving, yet sorrowful, red-light district. However, by the late 1920s, the winds of change began to blow. Fort-Monjol, a place that once whispered of despair, was demolished between 1926 and 1935. Rue Asselin was widened and, in a symbolic gesture, renamed Rue Henri Turot in 1935, honoring a man who dedicated his life to social justice and progress. Today, as you stroll along Rue Henri Turot, those shadowy remnants of the past might be hard to imagine. Yet, beneath the modern facade, the echoes of those bygone days linger, a reminder of a Paris both beautiful and brutal, prosperous and impoverished, and the constant dance between light and shadow that shapes every city’s soul.
