A new beginning. That’s what New Life Christian Community represents. Standing before this building you sense a vibrant history. New Life Christian Community wasn’t always here. Its story begins much earlier.
In 1947 plans were first proposed. The council reserved a site on the Temple Hill Estate for a Free Church. The idea of a union church for all Nonconformists was considered but abandoned. Highfield Baptist Church took on the responsibility for construction in 1951.
Part of the funding came from a war damage claim on a church in West Norwood. The Dartford Salvation Army band played at the laying of the foundation stone. The final cost was £1023. Sir Herbert Janes President of the Baptist Union officially opened New Life Christian Community in May 1956.
Interestingly the current building was intended as a church hall. The main church was never built. The land was used for warden-assisted flats now known as Norwood Court. The church managed these flats initially but they were later sold to private management.
