Gazing upon the Monument of the Millenium, one might sense a whisper of history echoing through its towering limestone columns. The Monument of the Millenium stands proudly in Wrigley Square, a serene corner of Chicago’s bustling Millennium Park. It’s a nearly perfect replica of a structure that graced this very spot from 1917 to 1953, a semi-circular peristyle of Doric columns. This original structure, designed by Edward H. Bennett, unfortunately met its demise to make way for a parking lot. But thanks to the generosity of the William Wrigley, Jr. Company, the Monument of the Millenium was reborn in 2002. The Wrigley Square Foundation contributed $5 million to recreate this piece of history, a testament to their appreciation for the park’s heritage. The Monument of the Millenium isn’t just a beautiful structure. It’s a tribute to the 122 founders of Millennium Park, whose names are etched into its base. These individuals and corporations played a crucial role in the park’s creation and continue to support its artistic and architectural curation. The monument’s elegant design, with its 40-foot Doric-style limestone columns, adds to Michigan Avenue’s landmark district designation. In 2017, the Monument of the Millenium underwent some artistic enhancements. LED color-changing lighting was installed, along with new pre-cast concrete elements and pavers for the fountain plaza at its base. The fountain itself is a charming detail, a bronze replica of the finials that adorn the nearby Wrigley Building. As you stand before the Monument of the Millenium, take a moment to appreciate its graceful presence. It’s a reminder of the past, a celebration of the present, and a symbol of the enduring spirit of Chicago.
