Tucked away within the bustling urban landscape of Elephant and Castle, The Rockingham Arms stands as a testament to London’s ever-evolving history. The current Rockingham Arms occupies a space rich with history. It’s built on the site of its namesake, a “long-standing” pub lost to the Blitz of the 1940s. Before the pubs, this corner was a hub of commerce, first as Tarns Department Store and later as Isaac Walton’s Store. Both stores, along with the original Rockingham Arms, met their demise during the relentless bombing raids of World War II. Today’s Rockingham Arms, part of the J D Wetherspoon chain, consciously revived the name, acknowledging the historical significance of this location. The very ground we stand on has borne witness to centuries of change, from elegant Georgian houses to a vibrant shopping district. The Rockingham Arms takes its name from Charles Wentworth, Marquis of Rockingham, a two-time Prime Minister in the 18th century. Interestingly, Rockingham himself had no particular connection to this area. His name, along with that of Prime Minister Pitt, simply graced local roads. Inside The Rockingham Arms, you’ll find framed drawings and texts that tell the story of both Lord Rockingham and the Elephant and Castle area. The name “Elephant and Castle,” it turns out, also has a fascinating history, originating from a blacksmith’s forge established in 1614. This forge, known first as the White House and later as the Elephant and Castle, eventually became a pub located where the roundabout now stands. The origins of the name remain a subject of speculation, with theories ranging from the crest of the Cutlers Company to a corruption of “Infanta of Castille.” The Rockingham Arms is more than just a pub. It’s a living link to London’s vibrant past. It’s a place where the echoes of Georgian elegance mingle with the memories of wartime devastation and the bustle of 20th-century commerce. So, raise your glass at The Rockingham Arms, not just to a good pint, but also to the enduring spirit of this historic corner of London.
