Imagine planning a university campus in 1920. That’s precisely when the idea for Lisbon’s Cidade Universitária first sparked. The vision? To gather all University of Lisbon facilities in one location near Campo Grande.

Initially, Quinta da Torrinha was purchased. The plan was to construct the future Faculty of Pharmacy there. Fast forward to 1930. Rector José Caeiro da Mata initiated the first plans. The goal was to build an entire university district. In 1953, the Hospital Universitário de Santa Maria opened. It became integrated with the Faculty of Medicine.

Now look around. The Faculty of Letters and the Faculty of Law buildings were completed in 1958. Architects Porfírio Pardal Monteiro and António Pardal Monteiro designed these buildings. Almada Negreiros created the drawings decorating their facades.

In 1960, the Cidade Universitária was legally established. The Reitoria building opened in 1961. Porfírio Pardal Monteiro and António Pardal Monteiro designed it. Almada Negreiros also created exterior drawings for this building. Inside, António Lino Pedras created mosaic panels. Lino António designed the stained glass for the main entrance hall. José Farinha sculpted the handrail of the grand staircase.

Notice the Aula Magna. It is designed for significant university events. It serves as a venue for diverse cultural and social happenings. It is considered one of Portugal’s best and most important performance halls. Daciano da Costa designed its interior.

The ISCTE was founded on campus in 1972. It was initially named Instituto Superior de Ciência do Trabalho e da Empresa. It remained an independent higher education institution. Over the years, it physically expanded on the campus. In 2009, ISCTE became ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa.

Cidade Universitária is home to many institutions. These include the Faculdade de Ciências and Faculdade de Direito. You’ll also find the Faculdade de Farmácia and Faculdade de Letras here. The Faculdade de Medicina and Faculdade de Medicina Dentária are present too. Also on site are the Faculdade de Psicologia, Instituto de Ciências Sociais, and Instituto de Educação. The Instituto de Geografia e Ordenamento do Território also calls this place home.

The central services of the Universidade de Lisboa are here. The Reitoria and Serviços de Ação Social are key. The Estádio Universitário and Cantina Velha also play vital roles. Other higher education institutions are adjacent. These include ISCTE and the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. The Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias is also nearby.

Three metro stations serve the Cidade Universitária. The Cidade Universitária station is the most central. Vieira da Silva’s art adorns it. Her work alludes to knowledge and the university. Entrecampos and Campo Grande stations are also heavily used by students.

The Reitoria, Faculdade de Direito, and Faculdade de Letras buildings form a notable ensemble. The Alameda da Universidade is part of this. This ensemble is classified as a National Monument.

Today, the Cidade Universitária stands as Portugal’s largest higher education campus. It hosts over 37,000 students. It is a testament to Lisbon’s commitment to education and culture.
