Did Marcel Lecoufle ever imagine his Demeure would become a whispered legend? Here we stand, before the Demeure Marcel Lecoufle, once vibrant with the man’s passion for orchids. Marcel Lecoufle, the “king of orchids,” breathed life into this place. His story intertwines with the very essence of orchid cultivation in France. Born into a family with deep roots in botany, his grandfather, Henri Vacherot, established orchid greenhouses in Boissy-Saint-Léger back in 1886. Marcel carried this legacy forward, creating his own establishment, the Demeure Marcel Lecoufle, in 1948. He transformed these grounds into a world-renowned orchid haven. He wasn’t just a cultivator; he was an innovator. Marcel Lecoufle pioneered the import of orchid seeds from Madagascar. He amassed an unparalleled collection that drew admirers from around the globe. Fashion icons, renowned actors, even presidents and royalty, all flocked to the Demeure Marcel Lecoufle to witness his floral masterpieces. His work earned him prestigious awards, including the first grand prize of honor at the 1964 Paris Floralies. This recognition cemented his status as a leading figure in the world of orchids. The Demeure Marcel Lecoufle wasn’t merely a business. It was a testament to a man’s lifelong dedication to his craft. He hybridized over 200 new orchids and meticulously recorded over 20,500 orchid fertilizations. His daughter, Geneviève, collaborated with him to build a state-of-the-art laboratory here. This facility allowed for advanced orchid propagation and research. Sadly, the Demeure Marcel Lecoufle closed its doors in 2011. A significant portion of his invaluable collection found a new home at the Montreal Botanical Garden. This ensures the preservation of rare species, some of which have vanished from their natural habitats. Though the greenhouses may be silent now, the legacy of Marcel Lecoufle continues to bloom.
