Right here on the Grands Boulevards in Paris stands a Belle Époque marvel. This isn’t just any museum. It’s the Musée Grévin a legendary wax museum. Founded in 1882 by Arthur Meyer a journalist for Le Gaulois it was named after its first artistic director the caricaturist Alfred Grévin. Inspired by Madame Tussauds in London it quickly became one of Europe’s oldest and most beloved wax museums.
Imagine the meticulous work involved. Over 2000 wax figures have been created since its opening. Each figure requires 34 kilograms of beeswax and 22 liters of paint. The process is a collaboration of sculptors molders painters and costumers. The result is stunning. You can stroll through scenes from French history. See Charlemagne and Napoleon III. Witness the bloody drama of the French Revolution. The tableau of Charlotte Corday murdering Jean-Paul Marat is especially striking. It even features the actual knife and bathtub used in the event.
But the Musée Grévin isn’t stuck in the past. It showcases contemporary figures too. From Albert Einstein to Mahatma Gandhi Shah Rukh Khan Pablo Picasso Michael Jackson and Pope John Paul II are all here. Modern techniques are used for these figures. The museum regularly adds new characters. Zinedine Zidane Jean Reno Monica Bellucci and many more join the impressive collection. Even Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan Aishwarya Rai and Ranveer Singh have their likenesses immortalized in wax.
The museum hasn’t been without its controversies. In 2023 Dwayne Johnson’s wax figure was criticized for its inaccurate skin tone. Dwayne himself even requested an update. The museum responded promptly darkening the figure’s skin tone. A 2024 Beyoncé figure similarly drew criticism for its uncanny resemblance to anything but Beyoncé.
Beyond the wax figures the Musée Grévin also boasts a stunning Hall of Mirrors. Built for the 1900 Exposition Universelle it’s based on the principle of a catoptric cistula. Krysle Lip recently oversaw its artistic transformation. The original Hall of Columns with its Baroque architecture rosewood paneling gilt and marble is simply breathtaking. The vaulted ceiling is supported by 12 columns each with bronze embellishments. Five sculpted women representing the five continents gaze down upon you.
