Let’s step back in time and imagine a different Chicago: a city with open fields and windswept sand dunes. In this setting, in 1906, the Jesuits purchased a plot of land bordered by Lake Michigan and Sheridan Road. Their vision was grand: to build a Catholic college and a parish. This parish, Saint Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, was dedicated in 1917, replacing a smaller, earlier church. The “new” Saint Ignatius was designed by Henry J Schlacks, a talented architect who learned from the masters Adler & Sullivan. This church stands as a testament to his skill, with its giant Bedford limestone columns, each carved from a single block of stone. These imposing columns create a stately, elegant façade, the perfect embodiment of its Roman Renaissance style. The church’s interior, designed by John Mallin, is just as intricate. Look closely, and you’ll find exquisite mural paintings that add a touch of color and artistry to its grand space. Saint Ignatius has a rich history, and its legacy continues to touch the neighborhood today.
