Opened on August 16 1952 the Melbbad in Bonn is more than just a swimming pool. It’s a piece of Bonn’s history. This sprawling 70000 square meter site nestled in the Poppelsdorf district was the brainchild of entrepreneur Alfred Ziehn. He initially owned ice and cold storage facilities on this very land. Can you imagine? A swimming pool built on the site of ice houses.

The Melbbad wasn’t always just about swimming. Initially it included a children’s zoo. Ponies and rare birds shared this space with swimmers. It wasn’t until 1956 that the city of Bonn took over the Melbbad.

Over the years the Melbbad has undergone numerous renovations and expansions. Warm water arrived in 1969. A new building housing changing rooms showers and toilets was added that same year and completed in 1971. These improvements ensured the Melbbad continued to serve Bonn’s residents for decades.

In 2008 the Melbbad faced closure. But thanks to a determined citizens’ protest organized by the Förderverein Unser Melbbad e V the pool was saved. The community’s love for the Melbbad proved stronger than the threat of closure.

Today the Melbbad boasts a 50-meter sports pool with eight lanes a diving pool with one-meter and three-meter diving boards and a large non-swimmer pool. There’s even a splash pool for the littlest visitors complete with a fun elephant slide. Beyond swimming there are volleyball courts a giant chess set and table tennis tables. And don’t forget the large sunbathing lawns perfect for relaxing after a refreshing dip. Food and drink options range from a bistro to occasional snack and ice cream stands. The Melbbad truly offers something for everyone.

The Melbbad remains a vital part of Bonn’s recreational landscape. It’s a testament to community spirit and the enduring power of local initiatives. It’s not just a pool. It’s a vibrant community hub a cherished landmark a place where generations of Bonners have made memories. Enjoy the rest of your visit.
