Before you stands the Hindu Temple of Minnesota. This temple serves over 40000 Hindus in the Minneapolis area.

Let’s dive into its story. In the late 1970s, Hindu families sought a place of worship. They wanted a space to connect and preserve their culture. They met in each other’s homes studying the Gita. They conducted puja and celebrated festivals.

In 1978, the Hindu Society of Minnesota (HSMN) was born. It was established as a non-profit organization. Its purpose was to celebrate the Hindu faith. It would preserve age-old customs.

In 1979, HSMN acquired its first temple. It was a century-old church in northeast Minneapolis. Three couples contributed $5000 each. This covered the $15000 down payment. The church became the Hindu Mandir.

The first formal Hindu prayers took place on February 17 1979. Framed pictures of deities adorned the dais. Renovations began in 1979 under Mr. Arun Shirole’s guidance. The first statue of Ganesha was installed in 1983. Drs. Kumud and Sashikant Sane donated it.

By the early 1990s, the Hindu community grew. The small Mandir was often full. Larger celebrations of festivals became regular features.

In December 1998, land was purchased in Maple Grove. It was for a new Hindu Temple. Initial Bhoomi Puja was performed in 1999. Another formal Bhoomi Puja followed in 2001.

Groundbreaking occurred on Vijaya Dashami, October 4, 2003. Construction began on the 43000 square foot Mandir.

From June 29, 2006, the first Kumbhabhisheka was performed. This anointed the newly built temple. Holy water came from sanctified vessels. The shrines of Sri Ganesh and others were consecrated.

Inside, 21 ornate shrines represent famous temples in India. Each is dedicated to a major Hindu deity. This includes Sri Ganesha and Sri Durga. The temple was built in stages from 2003 to 2009. It follows the Vastushastra system. This system aligns with directional ideals. The temple faces east. It sits on the highest point of land.

Temple tours are available on Saturdays and Sundays. Large celebrations occur for Holi and Diwali. Special spiritual ceremonies are offered. These are known as pujas. They even bless vehicles for safety.

Currently, the temple plans to develop 60 acres. This adjacent agricultural land will be for community use. It may include senior housing and a yoga retreat center.

The Hindu Temple of Minnesota stands as a testament. It shows the community’s dedication and vision. It rose from a small gathering in private homes. Now it is a large temple serving thousands. The Hindu Temple of Minnesota remains a vibrant center. It preserves culture and provides spiritual guidance.
