Here at the Rond-point de la Vanne we’re about to dive into a slice of Parisian life. But this isn’t just any traffic circle it’s a modern intersection designed with a nod to sustainable urban living.
Rond-point de la Vanne located in Rungis, a commune in the southern suburbs of Paris.
It is more than just a place where cars navigate. It is part of Vannes active mobility policy. The city implemented its second Dutch-style roundabout here. The first was installed near Rue de Strasbourg.
These roundabouts prioritize cyclists. How you may ask. The design places a protected cycle path around the outside of the traffic circle. This separates cyclists from cars offering enhanced safety.
The bike lanes are set back from the entry and exit points. Pedestrian crossings are close by. Cars stay on the inside of the circle. This layout improves safety and accessibility for cyclists. It maintains the usual roundabout rules for vehicles.
These types of roundabouts are common in the Netherlands. That is why they are named Dutch roundabouts. The goal is to make it easy for both pedestrians and cyclists to get around. They are part of an effort to promote greener transportation. There may be more of these roundabouts built in the future. The Pompidou roundabout may get the same treatment.
The redesign of the Rond-point de la Vanne also included some additional improvements. During the construction a bus lane was created on Boulevard de la Résistance. This connects to previous work done in the summer of 2023. A new cycle path was built and bus stops were added on Rue Winston Churchill. This stretches from Rond-point de la Vanne to the Cliscouët roundabout.
The work was carefully planned to reduce traffic problems as much as possible. The construction took place between September 25th and November 10th. The total cost of the project was 300000 euros. The goal is to make the city more accessible for cyclists.
So as we stand here at the Rond-point de la Vanne think about how cities are evolving. They are trying to balance the needs of drivers pedestrians and cyclists. This Dutch-style roundabout represents a step toward that balance. It is a small change but a meaningful one. The Rond-point de la Vanne is a testament to Vannes vision. It is a vision of a greener more accessible future.
