Remember when this bridge was actually red? That’s the story of Røde Bro. Today Røde Bro might not look red. But its history is deeply intertwined with that color.

Røde Bro translates to Red Bridge. For generations the bridge was a local landmark. Its red color made it a favorite spot for outings. Cyclists on tours often stopped here. Bridal couples posed for photos with the red bridge in the background.

But times changed. The bridge needed renovation in the early 2000s. The plan was to preserve Røde Bro. Crucially the plan was to keep its red color. But after spending half a million kroner the bridge was durable. Yet it was no longer red. Some called the color natural. Others said it was simply gray.

Local residents were not happy. They declared “It’s called the Red Bridge. It has been red for years. It must be red again.” Their dissatisfaction was widely shared. Many Bramming residents agreed.

In 2009 it seemed the battle to repaint Røde Bro red was won. Arguments about the bridge’s history were heard. City council politicians listened. The local council supported the project. Returning the red color seemed likely.

In 2010 a gathering was held at Røde Bro. About 150 people attended to eat red sausages. A bridge committee was formed. It consisted of local residents and members of the Bramming local council.

So why is Røde Bro still not red? When the bridge’s wood was replaced it was with African ironwood. This wood is maintenance-free. However it cannot be painted. Paint would trap moisture. This would destroy the wood from within.

So how can Røde Bro regain its red color without paint? One solution is to replace the ironwood. Use a type of wood that can be painted. But this would sacrifice the wood’s durability.

Another option is to paint the bridge. Accept the need to replace the wood more often. A third idea involves a false railing. Attach a separate red railing a few centimeters from the ironwood. This would give the appearance of a red bridge. The gray structure would still be there. But the red would be what people notice. It would be a facade solution.

Other solutions have been proposed. None have been implemented. As of 2021 Røde Bro remains gray. It stands as a reminder of good intentions and difficult choices. The dream of a red bridge persists.
