“Star Mosque” they call it. The Yildiz Hamidiye Mosque shimmers before us. It is more commonly known as Yildiz Camii. Sultan Abdul Hamid II commissioned this imperial Ottoman mosque. It stands in Istanbul’s Besiktas district near Yildiz Palace.

Imagine Abdul Hamid II in 1876. He had just ascended the throne. He felt uneasy at Dolmabahce Palace. He soon moved to Yildiz Palace. He feared his brother Murad V would be reinstated. Abdul Hamid wanted a mosque close to the palace. He ordered its construction for the Friday prayers. He did not want to be far from the palace.

Construction spanned from 1884 to 1886. Sarkis Balyan was the architect. The mosque blends Neo-Gothic style with Ottoman motifs. Look at the rectangular plan and single minaret. Notice how these elements combine. They create a unique architectural statement.

The Yildiz Camii became a symbol. It represented Abdulhamid’s vision. He saw the Ottoman state as a modern imperial caliphate. The mosque exuded splendor and prestige. A replica even stood in Damascus. This fostered unity among Arab subjects. The Yildiz Mosque symbolized Islamic brotherhood. It included diverse artistic influences.

Its inauguration was full of pomp. The sultan’s weekly visits for Friday prayers drew crowds. Foreign dignitaries marveled at the spectacle. These prayers strengthened the sultan’s image. Muslims worldwide saw him as a legitimate caliph.

But tragedy struck in 1905. Armenian revolutionaries attempted to assassinate Abdul Hamid II. They placed a bomb in a horse carriage. It was meant to explode as he entered the Yildiz Hamidiye Mosque. The sultan delayed his departure. He spoke with the Sheikh-ul-Islam. This unforeseen delay saved his life. Twenty-six others died. Fifty-eight more were wounded. The mosque suffered damage too.

The Yildiz Hamidiye Mosque survived Abdulhamid’s reign. Later sultans also used it. But with the rise of the Turkish Republic the capital moved to Ankara. Istanbul and its mosques faced neglect.

In 2017 after four years of restoration the Yildiz Camii reopened. It stands as a reminder. It embodies Abdulhamid’s vision. The Yildiz Hamidiye Mosque symbolizes Ottoman tradition. It shows architectural innovation. It stands as a testament to a bygone era.
