Separated from mainland Singapore by Selat Samulun, lies Pulau Samulun. This offshore island is part of the Jurong Industrial Estate. Today, Pulau Samulun houses Jurong Shipyard. It also has a food centre that caters to the workers there.

Pulau Samulun is less than a kilometre away from Singapore. Jalan Samulun is the only road on the island. It links Shipyard Road in mainland Singapore to Pulau Samulun.

Let’s journey back before 1961. Before industrial development transformed Pulau Samulun, about 150 families called this island home. Imagine a mosque gracing the top of a knoll. It was a focal point for the local Malay community. A school also served the island’s children.

The name “Samulun” whispers tales of the past. It comes from “sembulun”. They were a tribe of Orang Laut who once lived here. They lived off the sea.

In 1964, a bridge connected Jurong Industrial Estate to Pulau Semulun. Back then, it was the second-largest bridge in Singapore. This bridge symbolized progress. It linked the island to the mainland.

Today, SBS Transit Jurong Industrial Service 249 serves Pulau Samulun. It runs between Boon Lay Bus Interchange and Jalan Samulun. This bus service is unique. It is one of only two Singapore public bus services that operate outside mainland Singapore.

If you’re using public transport, several bus stops are near Pulau Samulun. Jln Samulun – Jurong Shipyard is just a 5-minute walk away. Shipyard Rd – Pec Ltd is about 13 minutes away. Tg Kling Rd – Bef Shipyard Rd is a 17-minute walk.

Pulau Samulun plays a vital role in Singapore’s industrial landscape. It stands as a testament to Singapore’s transformation. From a small island community to a thriving industrial hub.
