Around the turn of the 20th century a movement began to save Croham Ward. Croham Ward was part of a vast territory owned by the Whitgift Foundation. This charity was founded by John Whitgift Archbishop of Canterbury. Queen Elizabeth I even visited his Croydon palace. She refused an offer of Croham Ward. Her advisor Dr Dee used Croham Ward for astronomical observations. These observations may have influenced his book on navigation. Croham Ward’s history stretches back to prehistoric times. Evidence suggests a Late Mesolithic settlement existed there. A Bronze Age barrow was also found on top of Croham Hurst. In 1901 after years of campaigning Croham Ward was sold to Croydon Corporation. This preserved most of Croham Ward. During World War II Croham Ward’s hilltop position made it a vital location for defense. The 1st Anti-Aircraft Division placed guns there. They tested new computing devices for predicting incoming bombers. After the war Croham Ward hosted the Croham Free Festival. It was not very successful. The area is now valued for its natural beauty. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Its varied soils support diverse plant and animal life. Croham Ward continues to be a place of historical significance and natural beauty.
