“Data made visible.” That is the best way to describe The Eye of Mexico.
The Eye of Mexico stands before us. It is more than just a sculpture. It’s a meeting point. It is a place where art meets technology.
The Eye of Mexico is the first public sculpture in Latin America that uses artificial intelligence. Inaugurated on May 20, 2022, The Eye of Mexico stands 10 meters high and 3 meters wide.
MIRA, a real estate investment firm, and MASSIVart, a creative consulting agency, developed the project. They launched a global call for artists. The winner was Ouchhh, a creative studio. They specialize in new media experiences. Their vision is what we see before us today.
The Eye of Mexico is a silver ring. Screens line its inner part. These screens display environmental data. They show information about air quality. The screens show noise levels. They also show car and population density. The Eye of Mexico even tracks traffic lights and carbon emissions. This data is gathered at different times across Mexico.
Software transforms this raw data. It converts the data into readable files. Programs like C4D, Houdini, and After Effects then turn these files into images.
The goal of The Eye of Mexico is to make this data meaningful to us. It uses artistic expression to achieve this. Those involved see The Eye of Mexico as a portal. It is a portal to Mexico’s future. It uses data from the past and present to create this vision.
Located in Nuevo Polanco, Mexico City, The Eye of Mexico is more than just a pretty piece. It is a symbol of mobility. It is a symbol of functionality. It is a symbol of culture, leisure, and urbanism. The Eye of Mexico seeks to improve the lives of Mexico City residents. It expresses the relationship between art, science, technology, urbanism, and mobility.
Developer Ivanhoé Cambridge owns the real estate complex. MIRA developed it. MASSIVart curated and produced The Eye of Mexico.
The Eye of Mexico invites us to reflect. It prompts us to consider our relationship with the environment. It encourages us to think about the future. As the first AI public artwork in Latin America, The Eye of Mexico embodies the future.
