Can you imagine a hospital built underground? Erith and District Hospital is a testament to the resilience of a community, a place that has served the people of Erith, Crayford, Belvedere, and Abbey Wood throughout its history. It all began in 1871 as a humble two-cottage conversion known as the Erith, Crayford, Belvedere, and Abbey Wood Hospital. This modest establishment quickly became overwhelmed by the demands of the growing population. A few years later, a new site on Erith High Street provided extra space, but it was soon clear that a larger, purpose-built hospital was needed. In 1924, the Prince of Wales officially opened the hospital’s new location on Park Crescent. The new buildings boasted 21 beds, sun balconies, a dedicated operating theatre, and even a Nurses’ Home. Over the next decade, Erith and District Hospital underwent extensions and expansions, including the addition of a children’s ward in 1935.
But the real surprise is hidden beneath the surface. Fearful of impending war in 1938, an underground hospital was constructed as a central clearing station for bomb and gas victims. This impressive hidden facility remained operational throughout World War II, serving as a vital resource in the fight against the dangers of the time. In 1948, the hospital joined the National Health Service and a new outpatient department was completed the following year. The underground hospital, now half-sunken and concealed beneath the earth, was transformed into the X-ray department. Erith and District Hospital has continued to adapt and evolve throughout its history, leaving behind a legacy of service, resilience, and innovation.
