Founded in 1912 Ai Tong School stands proudly before you. Its history is rich and fascinating. Initially housed in a Methodist Church on Boon Tat Street with only 30 pupils Ai Tong quickly outgrew its humble beginnings.
By 1917 the school moved to a larger campus at 209 Telok Ayer Street. The increased enrollment brought its own challenges however. Ai Tong faced significant financial difficulties almost forcing the sale of its campus. Thankfully the generous support of Chinese businessman and philanthropist Tan Kah Kee saved the school from closure.
Tan Kah Kee’s continued financial aid ensured Ai Tong’s survival. In 1929 the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan took over the school’s administration solidifying its connection to the Hokkien community. After the Japanese occupation Ai Tong opened a branch school at the former Gan Eng Seng School premises. The demand for education was high. The school’s enrollment surged to over 1600 students.
In 1950 Ai Tong became co-educational welcoming female students from the defunct Ai Hwa School. This marked a significant change from its all-boys past. The school moved to a new Hokkien Huay Kuan building in 1955 boasting modern facilities like a science lab and a geography history room. Two years later it became a government-aided school.
The 1960s and 70s brought new challenges. The government’s bilingual policy led to a decline in Chinese-medium school enrollments. Ai Tong however adapted. By absorbing students from smaller closing Chinese schools it temporarily increased its enrollment. Later however Ai Tong faced a near-critical situation with just two students enrolling in 1980.
A crucial decision followed. Ai Tong moved to Ang Mo Kio in 1981. This strategic relocation coupled with dedicated staff revitalized the school. Enrollment grew dramatically from under 100 to over 2300 by 1987. In 1989 Ai Tong became one of the first schools granted Special Assistance Plan (SAP) status. This enhanced its focus on Chinese culture and values.
A final move took place in 1993. Ai Tong relocated to its current location at 100 Bright Hill Drive. The new campus further solidified the school’s commitment to academic excellence. The school underwent renovations and expansions over the years. Ai Tong’s legacy continues. It is known for its strong academic performance and its commitment to nurturing well-rounded students rooted in Chinese culture and values.
