Overlooking the untamed beauty of the open sea, the Batterie de Cavau stands as a silent sentinel. This windswept cliff at the southern end of Frioul Island whispers tales of a turbulent past. The Batterie de Cavau’s story begins between 1883 and 1886 when it was first constructed. It was initially equipped with two cannons, shelters, and a barracks, reflecting its strategic importance in defending the bay of Marseille. The name “Cap Cavau” itself, known since at least 1695, is a contraction of “Cap Vau,” meaning a place “down below” or at the southernmost point. Interestingly, the later spelling, “Caveaux,” used by the military, is actually incorrect. As technology advanced, so did the Batterie de Cavau. Between 1906 and 1908, it underwent a significant upgrade, replacing its original armament with four cannons and reinforced concrete shelters. These enhancements were crucial for withstanding the increasing power of artillery shells. A dwelling was added for the soldiers, along with a cistern for rainwater collection, improving the living conditions at this remote outpost. During World War II, the Batterie de Cavau became a key position in Hitler’s “Sudwall,” the Mediterranean counterpart to the Atlantic Wall. German forces occupied the site, utilizing the existing French cannons. They also began constructing concrete bunkers to protect the artillery, but only two were completed before the Allied liberation. A third, unfinished bunker remains as a stark reminder of this era. The Batterie de Cavau bears the scars of war. The site is pocked with shell craters from Allied bombardments in August 1944, including those from the USS Nevada, a battleship later used in Bikini Atoll nuclear tests. Today, the Batterie de Cavau stands in ruins. Its deserted bunkers now provide shelter not for soldiers, but for seagulls, especially during their springtime breeding season. The ruins evoke a sense of isolation, blending with the wild landscape. Although not open for public exploration due to safety concerns, the panoramic path leading to it offers stunning views. This path allows you to appreciate the Batterie de Cavau’s dramatic location and contemplate its intriguing history. The windswept plateau, once a bustling military site, now echoes with the cries of gulls, a poignant reminder of the passage of time.
