It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of history, laughter, and community spirit. It stands on land once owned by Raden Saleh, a remarkable figure in Indonesian history. This very ground was part of his sprawling estate, a testament to his artistic vision and love for nature. Raden Saleh, a Javanese-Arab socialite and Indonesia’s first maestro painter, purchased vast land in Cikini upon his return from Europe. He wasn’t just a painter, but a visionary who dreamt of bringing beauty and recreation to the people. In 1862, he opened Planten En Dierentuin, Jakarta’s first zoo and public park, right here on this land. Imagine the exotic animals, the lush greenery, and the delighted gasps of children experiencing the wonders of nature for the first time. After Raden Saleh’s passing, the land was donated to the colonial government. The zoo eventually moved to Ragunan, but the spirit of community and recreation remained, eventually evolving into what we now know as RPTRA Cikini.
