Could a place named Puhitahi hold the secrets of ancient warriors? Puhitahi, also known as Kingseat, whispers tales of Ngāti Te Ata Waiohua. They were the guardians of the Manukau Harbour, their protector, Kaiwhare, watching over the waters. Puhitahi was their stronghold, a place of power in their vast territory. Their lands stretched from Waiuku to the Waitākere Ranges. Imagine the bustling life in Puhitahi. The Ngāti Te Ata Waiohua were not just warriors. They were skilled gardeners, cultivating vast kūmara plantations on the volcanic slopes. They were fishermen, drawing sustenance from the abundant harbour. Theirs was a rich and complex society, interwoven with the land and the sea. But their story is also one of resilience. The iwi’s namesake, Te Ata-i-Rehia, a powerful chieftainess, witnessed the shifting tides of power. Her father, Huatau, controlled lands around prominent landmarks like Matukutūruru (Wiri Mountain). Te Ata-i-Rehia married a Ngāti Mahuta chief, whose untimely death ignited a conflict that ultimately secured Waiuku for her people.
