Beneath the rustling leaves of Leipzig’s Südfriedhof, the Geologengräber: Credner, Kossmat und Lauterbach stands as a silent testament to geological ingenuity. This shared grave site unites three significant figures of geoscience: Hermann Credner, Franz Kossmat, and Robert Lauterbach. Their interwoven stories are etched in stone, whispering tales of discovery and academic brilliance. The Geologengräber initially began as Kossmat’s final resting place. In 2014, his grave was tragically destroyed, only to be painstakingly reconstructed in 2015 by the dedicated Paul Benndorf Gesellschaft. A path of pine bark, paved with “stumbling stones,” now bisects the Geologengräber. This symbolic path represents the challenging journey of Harz geology during the 20th century. Lauterbach, a student of Kossmat, joined his mentor in this shared space in 2017. Their combined grave reflects their shared belief in the interconnectedness of geology and geophysics, a sentiment Lauterbach famously summarized: “Man kann Geophysik nicht ohne Geologie praktizieren.” Credner, initially laid to rest in the Neuer Johannisfriedhof, joined Kossmat and Lauterbach in 2018, completing the Geologengräber. The transfer of his remains, a complex undertaking involving the identification of his original burial site within the war-torn Friedhof, underscores the importance of honoring these scientific pioneers. The Geologengräber: Credner, Kossmat und Lauterbach is more than a burial site. It is a symbol of scientific legacy, collaboration, and the enduring pursuit of knowledge beneath the earth’s surface.
