This stadium, right here in Kandy, has a history as dramatic as a phoenix rising from the ashes. Before the roar of the crowds and the thrill of the games, this place was a lake. Imagine that: tranquil waters reflecting the sky where the stadium stands now. In 1897, the British, who were in control at the time, decided to transform this lake into a playing field. This wasn’t just a whim. The British saw sports as a way to instill their values and exert their influence. But the transformation of Bogambara didn’t stop there. It became a multi-purpose venue, hosting not just cricket and rugby, but also carnivals, games, and even circus acts! However, the darkest chapter of its past is that it was also used as an execution ground. Now, let’s fast forward to 1972. Bogambara Stadium underwent a major renovation, thanks to the efforts of M.B. Samarakoon and the generosity of local politicians like E. L. Senanayake and philanthropists like E. W. Balasuriya. This transformation marked the beginning of its journey into a modern sporting arena. Bogambara Stadium has seen it all, from humble beginnings to a vibrant sporting hub.
