Unkapanı meaning ‘without scales’ designated the place where flour was weighed. The area thrived as a crucial commercial hub. Ships laden with barley and wheat anchored nearby. Officials ensured fair pricing. They prevented dishonest merchants from exploiting customers. These officials the ‘Yiğitbaşı’ set fixed prices for goods weighed on the scales.
