Once upon a time, Dreye was just a small part of a much bigger story. Imagine traveling back to 860. A sick girl from “Wege” journeyed to Bremen to visit Saint Willehad’s grave. Legend says a miracle cured her. Fast forward, and you’ll find that it wasn’t until March 1, 1974, that Dreye officially became part of Weyhe.

Weyhe, where Dreye is located, is a municipality in the district of Diepholz. It is in Lower Saxony, Germany. Weyhe sits about 15 km south of Bremen. This places Dreye within a historically rich and geographically significant area.

Today, Dreye is more than just a name on a map. Dreye station connects this village to the wider world. The Dreye train station is on the Wanne-Eickel–Hamburg railway line. NordWestBahn operates the train services here.

Since December 2010, the Dreye station has been part of the Bremen S-Bahn. This integration has improved local transportation. It offers convenient access to larger urban centers.

But the story of Dreye is also a story of people. Delving into family history, the surname Dreye has its own tale. It may be linked to the Russian and Belorussian name Andreyev. This name means “son of Andrey”. It comes from the Greek name Andreas.

The distribution of the Dreye surname shows roots in different regions. These details highlight the diverse paths of families connected to the name Dreye. Geneanet records show over 1,300 individuals with the Dreye name.

Looking at Bremen’s history, you see a city that has been independent for much of its 1,200 years. Bremen was a key member of the Hanseatic League. This powerful league controlled North Sea and Baltic trade.

Bremen faced challenges to maintain its independence. It had to contend with the Prince-Archbishop of Bremen. Later, it dealt with the Swedes. They controlled surrounding duchies after the Thirty Years’ War.

In the late 19th century, Bremen became part of the German Empire. Bremerhaven’s new wharves boosted the city. Bremen became Germany’s main port for emigration to the Americas.

During the 20th century, Bremen lost autonomy under the Hitler regime. After World War II devastated the city, autonomy was restored. Bremen became a founding state of the German Federal Republic.

From the 1950s, Bremen’s economic boom drew workers from Turkey and Southern Europe. Today, a significant portion of Bremen’s population has recent non-German roots.

Dreye, as part of Weyhe and the larger Bremen area, shares in this intricate history. It reflects centuries of trade, conflict, and cultural exchange. The little village of Dreye is connected to the wider world. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of this region.
