The Labyrinth Installation is a fully immersive wonderland of reflections. It warms and plays with reality. Christian Wagstaff and Keith Courtney are the masterminds behind this experience. They are also known for the immersive installation, House of Mirrors. The Labyrinth Installation uses over 40 tonnes of steel and 15 tonnes of mirrored glass. It creates a reality-bending magic.
Originally commissioned by MONA, the Labyrinth Installation has toured Australia. Now, it has found a home in Melbourne. According to Courtney, being on the Arts Centre forecourt in such a prominent location is a home run. Wagstaff and Courtney upped the ante for their hometown. They added even more mirrors making it a little harder to navigate.
Visitors are half of the artwork. Their responses and movements bring the Labyrinth Installation to life. People are often intimidated at first because they can’t quite figure it out. The optics are quite potent but then they start to play with it.

Another Labyrinth Installation in Melbourne is the Firelight Labyrinth. It is an immersive multimedia experience set beneath Marvel Stadium. It transforms the iconic grounds into a mythical labyrinth of light and sound. This is part of the Firelight Festival. This event includes the world premiere of a new immersive experience called Firelight Labyrinth.
The Firelight Labyrinth tells a modern version of the mythology of Theseus and the Minotaur. Theseus ventures to Crete to slay the Minotaur. He is guided by Ariadne and unravels the maze. He uses a red thread and defeats the Minotaur. The Firelight Labyrinth uses cutting-edge technology and dynamic audio. Over 144,000 lights create an astonishing array. Visitors journey with Theseus into the labyrinth. They witness his battle with the Minotaur.
