In 1900 a small group of Christians met above the Westminster Bank. This humble beginning marked the genesis of Walton Baptist Church. They later gathered in a room above the Co-op. Their faith flourished. By July 1901 eleven members formed a Baptist Church. In 1903 they purchased land on Winchester Road. This purchase cost 400 pounds.
The first church building opened on November 5 1904. It could hold 160 people. The construction cost 800 pounds. As membership grew a school hall kitchen and toilets were added in 1908. This expansion reflects the church’s increasing influence within the Walton community.
Walton Baptist Church’s commitment extended beyond local boundaries. In 1945 the church sent its first missionaries to the Congo. More than 45 members have served as missionaries abroad. Today Richard and Nia Jones serve in Malaysia. Beth and Marcus Stewart are in New Zealand. Howard and Teresa Drew work with WYAM in the UK. Joy Marshall serves in Jerusalem. These dedicated individuals carry the church’s message of hope and faith across the globe.
The current church building was constructed in 1952. It has undergone numerous additions and renovations. This reflects the church’s continuous growth and adaptation to changing times. The church stands as a testament to enduring faith. It has faced challenges yet persevered. Its story is one of expansion and international outreach.
Today Walton Baptist Church continues its mission. It provides spiritual guidance and community support. The church looks to the future with hope and confidence.
