Why is Domaine de La Lanterne called “The Lantern”? We are standing here before this rather unassuming building. It doesn’t exactly scream “luxury retreat for presidents,” does it? The name “The Lantern” actually comes from a time when this was a much smaller, simpler building. Domaine de La Lanterne started as a humble hunting lodge built in 1787. It was a gift from King Louis XV to the Comte de Noailles, the captain of his hunts. You see, even kings need a place to escape the pressures of court. This lodge, with its modest three rooms, provided just that. Later, the Comte’s son, the Prince de Poix, decided to make it his primary residence. He added extensions and, most importantly, thirty-six large French windows. These windows bathed the interior in so much sunlight that people started calling it “The Lantern.” Imagine that – a hunting lodge so bright and airy it earned a name like that! Over the centuries, Domaine de La Lanterne passed through many hands, from royalty to revolutionaries, even to an American ambassador. Each left their mark, transforming the lodge into the grand yet discreet presidential retreat it is today.
