Established in 2011, the MCAD Sculpture Garden isn’t just a collection of art. It’s a living classroom. Here, students from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) learn the art of public art. They experiment and collaborate, bringing their visions to life. The garden showcases their hard work. You’ll find both permanent installations and rotating exhibits. These works are created by MCAD students, alumni, faculty, and even invited artists. The garden is an extension of the Public Art/Art in Public Places course. In this course, students work with professional artists. They learn the entire process of designing and fabricating outdoor art. This includes everything from initial concept to final installation. They create proposals, build models, select materials, and handle the rigging. The MCAD Sculpture Garden isn’t just for the college. It’s a gift to the Whittier neighborhood. It sits on the south end of the campus along 26th Street. The garden enhances the campus and enriches the lives of those in the community. It allows everyone to experience art in their everyday lives. This amazing space exists thanks to the generosity of Donna MacMillan and the late Cargill MacMillan, Jr. Their support has made the MCAD Sculpture Garden a place where art thrives and inspires.
