Have you ever heard of the Saihoji Temple Mountain Tumulus Group? This is a truly fascinating archaeological site. The Saihoji Temple Mountain Tumulus Group is located on the eastern bank of Ota River. It is, in fact, one of the greatest archaeological finds in Japan. It was discovered in 1947, just two years after the end of World War II. It is not one tumulus, but a whole group of tumuli.

The Saihoji Temple Mountain Tumulus Group consists of six stone chambers and one stone coffin. The largest chamber is located at the bottom and measures 2 meters wide and 6 meters long. The smaller chambers are all located on the side of the hill. There are traces of a stone stairway on a steep slope. The chambers would have been sealed with large stones when the burial was complete. This is a rare find and reflects the sophistication of the ancient Japanese.

The Saihoji Temple Mountain Tumulus Group is a testament to the rich history of Hiroshima. It is a reminder of the importance of preserving our past so that future generations can learn from it. If you look at the landscape, you can also see that the Saihoji Temple Mountain Tumulus Group was in a prime location. It sits on a hill overlooking the river, and it was likely once part of a larger cemetery. The tumuli are evidence of human activity, which goes back to the end of the Kofun era.
