The imposing facade of 510 Marquette stands before you, its granite columns reaching up toward the sky. Right here, in the heart of Minneapolis, this grand building has witnessed a century of change. This was the very first home of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. It was built in 1915 with a rather unusual design. Its lower walls were intentionally windowless, filled with large bricks instead. You wouldn’t be able to look out at the street until you climbed to the upper floors.

But the building wasn’t content with four floors. In 1956, nine more stories were added, creating a sky-piercing structure that soared above the city. Though this addition didn’t match the original design, it spoke of a new era, a time when the building’s purpose would evolve.

Fast forward to 1973. The Federal Reserve moved to a newer, more modern building, leaving its original home behind. It was then that this iconic structure was transformed into the office building we see today. The lower floors were given a makeover, with the granite replaced by a limestone facade. A lush, indoor garden filled with ficus trees and pools of water was created; it was the largest artificial garden found within an office building in the United States at the time. This ambitious project aimed to bring a touch of nature into the heart of the city. The building even connected to the Minneapolis Skyway System, making it an even more integral part of the city’s fabric.

Though its past belongs to the Federal Reserve, 510 Marquette stands as a monument to the changing face of Minneapolis. Its grand design and innovative renovation demonstrate the city’s spirit of adaptation and progress. Now, it’s a symbol of modern urban life, bustling with activity and offering a window into the past. Today, 510 Marquette is more than just a building; it’s a living testament to a city that constantly renews itself.
