“Ever heard of Mogyoród Don Boscoja?” That’s what they called Falka József. Here before us stands the Falka József Plaque. It commemorates a remarkable man. He was a Salesian monk. He was also a talented musician. Falka József dedicated his life to serving others.
Falka József was born in 1917 in Bacza. This town was in Transylvania. His father was a Reformed pastor. After his father’s death, the family converted to Catholicism. József joined a Salesian institute in 1930. He later became a priest in 1947.
After the dissolution of religious orders in 1950, Falka József became a cantor. He first worked in Cinkota. Then in 1964, he moved to Mogyoród. He remained there until his death.
In Mogyoród, Falka József founded a choir. It still exists today. It is named after him. The Falka József choir sings his works. He also taught music to children. He even provided instruments to families. Many of his students became musicians.
Falka József did more than teach music. He revived three important traditions. These were the Bethlehem play, the cradle carrying and the wafer distribution. He ensured every family in Mogyoród received wafers. This was regardless of their religion or financial status.
Falka József was a composer too. He co-wrote a cimbalom method book. It became known internationally. His Saint Stephen Mass was broadcast by Radio Free Europe. This happened during its performance in Bamberg, Austria.
He connected with everyone. He treated everyone with respect. He offered help and guidance. Falka József encouraged many to attend good church schools. People felt comfortable around him. He communicated well with everyone. He was accepting and treated everyone as equals. He conveyed a cheerful outlook. He used humor.
Falka József organised excursions. He fostered a love of music. He was a true public educator. Falka József’s influence extended beyond music. He was posthumously named an honorary citizen in 2000. The public area outside the Catholic church was named after him. This Falka József Plaque stands as a testament to his legacy.
