Dream of a space honoring women. That dream became Parque Mujeres Argentinas. It is located in the modern Puerto Madero neighborhood of Buenos Aires.
Parque Mujeres Argentinas stands as a testament to Argentine women. It recognizes their historical significance. The park’s creation was part of a larger project. This project aimed to revitalize Puerto Madero’s green spaces. Architects Vila, Cajide, Garay, Magariños, Novoa, and Joselevich designed it. They shaped the park in 1996. Construction did not begin until 2005. Caputo SA was the contractor.
Inaugurated in 2007, the opening ceremony included important figures. Néstor Kirchner, Cristina Kirchner, and Jorge Telerman attended. Singer Nacha Guevara performed at the event.
The park spans 5.37 hectares on the east side of Dique 3. It features a large central plaza. This plaza is designed like an amphitheater. Green, terraced edges surround it. A wide belt of trees and shrubs encircles the area.
The landscape design evokes old Buenos Aires riverfronts. The park’s topography uses significant earth movement. This elevates the park. It creates space underneath. Originally, this space was intended for parking. The design balances urban structure and natural elements.
Notably, Parque Mujeres Argentinas aligns with Plaza de Mayo. Its design incorporates a unique relief. Earthworks create the terraced, green amphitheater. The average height is +3.00 meters. This matches the sidewalk level on the west side. Gabion walls trace the perimeter. They define an irregular, curved shape. These walls retain the slope. They allow the park to be perceived as a unified space. Dry plazas mark the corners. These plazas offer transitions to the city. They provide access to the upper level of the park.
A main path crosses the park axially. It starts at the river access. The entrance features native plants and trees. These create lush environments for visitors. The location along the city’s founding axis adds symbolic value. It provides a large outdoor amphitheater. This is for public events.
Parque Mujeres Argentinas was completed after Parque Micaela Bastidas. Its design is more refined. This was partly due to cost reductions. Initially, the park’s slopes were to descend toward the river. This orientation was due to underground parking. When the parking was removed, the embankment was reversed.
The park does not allow sports. Activities like biking and football are prohibited. These activities could damage the sprinkler system. They could also harm the park’s slopes.
Parque Mujeres Argentinas earned recognition. It received the 2008 XVI BIENAL PANAMERICANA DE ARQUITECTURA DE QUITO award. It won First Prize in Landscape Architecture.
