Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Parisian life lies Square Edmée Chandon. It’s a tranquil oasis, a testament to a remarkable woman who defied societal norms and reached for the stars. Square Edmée Chandon, formerly known as Square Frot-Phalsbourg, was renamed in 2004 to honor the French astronomer, Édmée Chandon (1885-1944). This small green space, accessible via the Cité de Phalsbourg and near the Charonne metro station, holds a significant place in the heart of the 11th arrondissement. Édmée Chandon’s story is one of brilliance and perseverance. Born in the same arrondissement as the square that now bears her name, she achieved two baccalaureates in 1903, one in literature and the other in science. She then earned a degree in mathematics and physics from the Sorbonne. At the young age of 23, she topped the agrégation exam in mathematics, a remarkable achievement for anyone, let alone a woman in the early 20th century. Driven by her passion for astronomy, Chandon joined the Paris Observatory as an intern in 1908. Her talent and dedication quickly led to her appointment as an assistant astronomer in 1912, making her the first professional female astronomer appointed to the Observatory. This was a groundbreaking moment, widely celebrated by the press, as it challenged the prevailing societal norms that limited women’s opportunities in scientific fields. Chandon’s contributions to astronomy were significant. Her work covered a range of topics, from the study of tides and the observation of double stars to the operation of the prism astrolabe. In 1930, she earned her doctorate in mathematical sciences. While she was never appointed as a full astronomer due to her gender, Édmée Chandon paved the way for future generations of female astronomers, including Renée Herman, who became the first French female full astronomer in 1965. Square Edmée Chandon stands as a tribute to her legacy. It’s a reminder of her groundbreaking achievements and her enduring contribution to the world of science.
