Ever wonder where Budapest’s wastewater goes? The Zsigmond téri szennyvízátemelő telep stands here. It is a vital part of the city’s water management system. This facility has been quietly working since 1917.

Budapest’s early sewage systems were a problem. Until 1869, Buda Óbuda and Pest lacked proper drainage. Engineers like Joseph Bazalgette and Reitter Ferenc developed plans. Work finally began to channel the city’s waste.

Construction on the Zsigmond téri szennyvízátemelő telep started in 1912. It finished in 1917. The plant collects wastewater from Budaújlak and Óbuda. It treats the water before releasing it into the Danube.

The location was chosen carefully. Rainwater flows quickly from nearby hills. The plant needed powerful pumps. The pump house contains six units. Each can transfer 7.6 cubic meters of water per second. That is a lot of water.

The Zsigmond téri szennyvízátemelő telep still operates today. There were plans to expand it. These plans never materialized.

In 1987, a unique museum opened here. It is the Csatornázás-történeti Gyűjtemény. This museum showcases the history of sewage systems. Inside you can see old machinery. The staircase railings are original. Even the light switches are vintage. These were made by Magyar Siemens-Schuckert Művek. They display an Art Nouveau style.

The Zsigmond téri szennyvízátemelő telep played a crucial role. It helped modernize Budapest’s sanitation. Next time you flush a toilet think of this place. It is a hidden piece of Budapest’s history. This unglamorous but essential facility keeps our city clean.
