Amidst the Trocadero Gardens stands La Joie de Vivre. The Joy of Life is more than just a statue. It embodies the spirit of Paris.
This magnificent sculpture group was created by Leon-Ernest Drivier for the 1937 Exposition Internationale. The Exposition celebrated arts and technology in modern life. Drivier’s masterpiece quickly became a focal point.
Originally, the gardens were designed by Jean-Charles Alphand. The gardens were redesigned for the exhibition. Roger Henri Expert led the redesign. Several French sculptors were commissioned. They adorned the gardens with monumental statues like La Joie de Vivre.
Drivier was born in Grenoble in 1878. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He became an illustrator and sculptor. Drivier even worked in Auguste Rodin’s studio. He befriended other famous sculptors like Antoine Bourdelle.
La Joie de Vivre shows Drivier’s talent. It secured many public commissions for him. The Joy of Life features multiple figures and animals. Look closely. You will spot muses, a horse, and even a goat.
Some call it Les Muses et La Joie de Vivre. The statue group is at the bottom of the Trocadero Gardens. From here, you can see the Eiffel Tower. It stands proudly across the River Seine.
Drivier used a method called block stone carving. He meticulously shaped each figure. The result is a complex and captivating work of art. Notice the man looking over a kneeling young person.
Drivier sculpted two nymphs for the Palais de Tokyo. But those were not as big as The Joy of Life. Other works by Drivier are in Argentina, Turkey, and Canada. He also created a statue of Voltaire. Plus, a gilded bronze statue of Athena graces Paris.
La Joie de Vivre remains Drivier’s most recognized work in Paris. The Joy of Life captures a sense of freedom and harmony. It invites viewers to revel in life’s simple pleasures.
The sculpture is on the southeastern side of the Trocadero Fountains. These fountains are also known as the Fountains of Warsaw. Their water cannons add to the vibrant atmosphere.
