Picture a hilltop overlooking a bustling city, a sanctuary of nature amidst the urban sprawl – this is Hilly Fields. This sprawling Victorian park, located in Ladywell ward in Lewisham, South East London, has a history rich in community spirit and resilience. In the late 19th century, as Deptford Common was lost to developers, Hilly Fields faced a similar fate. But Octavia Hill, a philanthropist and co-founder of the National Trust, intervened. Led by Hill, a committee of influential people fought for the preservation of this green space. Their efforts were successful, and Hilly Fields was officially opened as a public park on May 16th, 1896. It wasn’t just a park; it was a testament to the power of community action. Now, imagine walking through this park, where you’ll find a charming cafe called Pistachios in the Park. Enjoy a relaxing moment while admiring a poignant mural depicting the park’s original bandstand. The park’s history is interwoven with the surrounding community. A school, initially built in 1884-5 as West Kent Grammar School, stands in the heart of the park. It later became Brockley County Secondary School and then Prendergast School. This school is Grade II* listed for its exceptional mural paintings, a testament to the creative spirit that flourishes within Hilly Fields. Hilly Fields is more than just a park; it’s a place where history, nature, and community converge. It’s a reminder that even amidst a bustling city, pockets of green can still bloom. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty and resilience of Hilly Fields, a green oasis in the heart of London.
