A vibrant splash of color greets you. This is the La Fresque du Demi-Millenaire Part 1 mural. It stretches along the Route de Vienne a former section of the N7 south of Lyon. It’s a remarkable artwork celebrating the 500th anniversary of the birth of Saint John of God. This Portuguese religious figure founded the Order of Hospitaller Brothers in 1539.

The mural adorns the walls of the Saint Jean de Dieu psychiatric hospital. Its creation in September 1998 is a testament to artistic collaboration. Georges Faure and Les Elephants Heureux designed and painted this masterpiece. The artwork extends for 600 meters. It seamlessly blends history and art.

The mural’s northern section is captivating. A striking depiction of buildings arcades and a wooded park. Notice a window on the first floor. It features Paul de Magallon. He founded the hospital in 1824. Below that a panel titled ‘La Leçon de Psychiatrie’ showcases eight giants of psychiatry and psychoanalysis. Their images line the wall. These include Jean-Martin Charcot Philippe Pinel Jacques Lacan Melanie Klein Sigmund Freud Jean Etienne Esquirol Carl Gustav Jung and Gaetan Gatian de Clerambault.

The southern part unfolds chronologically. Starting from the south heading towards Lyon. The scenes progress through time. First there’s Montemor-o-Novo in Portugal celebrating the birth of Saint John of God in 1495. Then Granada Spain highlights the founding of the Hospitaller Order in 1539. The final scene depicts Lyon itself a city inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. It’s a stunning representation of Lyon’s rich cultural heritage.

Even waiting for the bus is an experience. You’ll find yourself sitting near a bus stop. There Sigmond Freud awaits. He’s ready for a little analysis. This clever inclusion adds to the mural’s unique charm. The La Fresque du Demi-Millenaire Part 1 mural is more than just a painting. It’s a vibrant journey through history art and the human mind. It’s a true testament to Lyon’s artistic spirit. Don’t miss this colorful celebration of life and legacy.
