Envision a place where girls’ education blossomed amidst the grandeur of a bygone era. Korowa Anglican Girls’ School, nestled in the leafy suburb of Glen Iris, stands as a testament to the vision of Mrs. Henrietta Akehurst. In 1899, she dared to dream of a school where girls could flourish, starting with just one student in her own Malvern home. Korowa Anglican Girls’ School quickly outgrew its humble beginnings. It moved to Wattletree Road and then, in a pivotal moment in 1914, found its permanent home in the magnificent “Ranfurlie” estate. This grand residence, formerly owned by Victorian Premier George Kerferd and later by Hon. William Knox, provided a fitting backdrop for the school’s growth. The name “Korowa” itself has a story. Originally “Corowa,” it was changed to avoid confusion with a town of the same name. This reflects the school’s evolution, from its Presbyterian roots to its current status as an Anglican institution. Korowa Anglican Girls’ School’s motto, “Palma Non Sine Pulvere,” meaning “No reward without effort,” encapsulates its ethos. The school crest, featuring palm leaves and an Archbishop’s mitre, symbolizes victory and the school’s connection to the Anglican Church. From the Early Learning Centre to Year 12, Korowa offers a comprehensive education. Students engage in a wide range of subjects, from traditional academics to specialist areas like art, music, and languages. The school’s commitment to outdoor education and sporting activities further enriches the student experience. Korowa Anglican Girls’ School boasts notable alumnae who have excelled in various fields, from tennis and swimming to opera and literature. These “Korovians” embody the school’s values of resilience, determination, and a commitment to excellence. Korowa Anglican Girls’ School is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a place where girls are empowered to achieve their full potential, where they are nurtured and supported by a dedicated community. It’s a place where history whispers through the halls and inspires future generations.
