Fevzi Çakmak: A name synonymous with Turkish resilience and military prowess. Born in Istanbul in 1876, Fevzi Çakmak’s life journey is a tapestry woven with threads of war, leadership, and unwavering dedication to his country. Fevzi Çakmak’s military career began in the twilight years of the Ottoman Empire. He navigated the tumultuous Balkan Wars, witnessing firsthand the empire’s crumbling defenses. During World War I, he commanded troops at Gallipoli, in the Caucasus, and in Syria, rising through the ranks to become Chief of the General Staff in 1918. As the Ottoman Empire breathed its last, Fevzi Çakmak made a pivotal decision. He abandoned his post in the sultan’s government to join Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s resistance movement in Anatolia. This act of defiance marked his commitment to the birth of a new Turkey. In Ankara, he served as both Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, orchestrating key victories during the Turkish War of Independence. Fevzi Çakmak’s strategic brilliance was evident in the Battle of Sakarya, a turning point in the war. He later planned and commanded the Great Offensive, culminating in the decisive Battle of Dumlupınar. This victory cemented Turkey’s independence and earned Çakmak the title of Mareşal, Field Marshal, a rank shared only with Atatürk. Fevzi Çakmak continued to serve as Chief of the General Staff until 1944, guiding the Turkish Armed Forces through years of modernization. Even in retirement, his commitment to his country remained steadfast. He entered politics, serving as a member of parliament. He was even considered as a potential successor to Atatürk as President, a testament to the respect he commanded. Fevzi Çakmak died in Istanbul in 1950. He is buried in the Eyüp Cemetery, his final resting place in the city of his birth. The suburb that bears his name serves as a constant reminder of his contributions.
