Landscape gardeners Denis and Eugène Bühler designed the park in 1856. Engineer Gustave Bonnet also helped. The Parc de la Tête d’Or opened in 1861.

The botanical gardens have a rich history. They started in 1796 on the slopes of La Croix Rousse. They moved to the Parc de la Tête d’Or in 1857. The glass houses were built in 1860. They house tropical and equatorial plants. The gardens focus on education, conservation and research.
