Mallorca cradles secrets. This tour will reveal one. We are standing before the Cova des Penya-Segat. Have you heard of it?

The Cova des Penya-Segat is a cave. It sits in the municipality of Calvià. The cave lies in the Serra de Son Camps. This is between the municipalities of Calvià and Palma.

Let’s talk access. You can drive here two ways. One way is from the Ma-1041 road. Take the exit at Km 8.500 to the Ma-1016. Pass the Son Camps estate. At Km 9.270, turn left onto the track. It leads to Serra de Son Camps. You will pass sa Coma Bella. You will also pass Puig Gros and Rota de Son Camps. Another way starts in Palma. Go through the Son Vida urbanization. Drive to the top of Albercux street. Park there. Take the path up to the track. You will reach Puig de sa Coma Fosca. The wall ahead marks the Palma-Calvià boundary. It divides Son Vida and Son Camps.

Now, let’s approach on foot. At the top of Albercux street, you will see a barrier. It blocks the path. Access the Son Camps track about a hundred meters below. Find the only undeveloped plot for now. Look for steps carved into the rock. Follow them to the left. At the junction, turn right downhill. You will see a Forn de Calç. From there, walk 60 meters uphill. Go cross-country. The Cova des Penya-Segat is under pine trees. These trees were downed by a recent storm. It takes about 20 minutes to walk. The distance is 871 meters.

The main chamber of the Cova des Penya-Segat is 12 by 8 meters. Its height varies from 1 to 2.87 meters. It faces east to west. A branch extends 8.5 meters long. It is 1 meter wide and 1.30 meters high. The floor is mostly flat. There are some stones and thick roots on one wall. The main chamber has two entrances. They are almost blocked. One is blocked by rocks. The other by fallen pines. The Cova des Penya-Segat has few formations. There is not much to highlight. A third entrance faces west. It is a few meters higher. It is a rectangular space with nothing special. A tiny passage blocked by stones connects to the main chamber.

Remember the Cova des Penya-Segat. It is one of over 200 cave systems on Mallorca. While most are closed to the public, a few like this one reveal the island’s hidden depths.
