Atop the Gereja Pantekosta di Indonesia in Jakarta stands a cross a symbol of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. This Jakarta church is more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith resilience and the powerful spread of Pentecostalism across Indonesia.

The Gereja Pantekosta di Indonesia GPdI wasn’t always known by this name. It began in 1921 as the Vereeniging De Pinkstergemeente in Nederlandsch Oost Indie. This reflects its origins under Dutch colonial rule. Two missionary families Rev Cornelius Groesbeek and Rev Richard Van Klaveren brought Pentecostal beliefs from Seattle USA. They arrived in 1921 initially settling in Bali.

Their ministry later shifted to Surabaya then Cepu. In Cepu F G Van Gessel a BPM employee found faith. He was filled with the Holy Spirit. Many Indonesians followed including H N Runkat J Repi and A Tambuwun. These individuals became pioneers of Pentecostalism throughout Indonesia.

The rapid growth led to official recognition. In 1924 the Dutch East Indies Government acknowledged De Pinkster Gemeente. This was a significant step for the burgeoning faith. Further recognition came in 1937. The government elevated its status to Kerkgenootschap a church alliance. The name changed to Pinksterkerk in Nederlandsch Indie.

The Japanese occupation in 1942 brought about a renaming to Gereja Pantekosta di Indonesia the name we know today. Pdt H N Runkat led the church at this crucial point. The church’s logo beautifully represents its core beliefs. The dove symbolizes the Holy Spirit. The open Bible represents the gospel. The blue flame signifies Pentecostal zeal.

The Gereja Pantekosta di Indonesia GPdI’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Several splits occurred creating new churches. Pdt Ho Liong Seng founded the GBI church in 1950 after separating. Pdt Ishak Lew established GPPS in 1959. The Assemblies of God emerged in 1936 after a split. These are just a few examples of the complex history of the Gereja Pantekosta di Indonesia GPdI and its offshoots.

Despite these divisions the Gereja Pantekosta di Indonesia GPdI thrived. Pioneers like Pdt H N Runkat expanded its reach across Java. Pdt Yulianus Repi and Pdt A Tambuwun spread the word in North Sulawesi. Pdt E Lesnussa reached Makassar. Pdt S I P Lumoindong served in Yogyakarta. Pdt A E Siwi ministered in Sumatra. These individuals and many others dedicated their lives to spreading their faith. Their work created the strong roots of the Gereja Pantekosta di Indonesia GPdI we see today. The church continues to serve as a vibrant center of faith in Jakarta. Its history is one of growth adaptation and perseverance a story worth remembering.
