Picture these magnificent beasts. Eight European bison. They stand majestically in northern Portugal. This is the Bisonte-americano story. It’s a tale of rewilding and a remarkable comeback. For thousands of years no bison roamed Portugal. Not since the last Glacial Maximum. Then came a bold rewilding project. A herd of bison was translocated from Poland. Their new home The Greater C\u00f4a Valley. They arrived in a large valley. A quarter-million acres of land await them. This land boasts a mix of habitats. Scrub Mediterranean forests and steep gorges. It’s a rich ecosystem already home to Iberian wolves. Roe and red deer thrive here. Wild boar too. Majestic eagles soar above. Even an ancient cattle breed roams freely. These bison are vital to this landscape. They will help prevent catastrophic wildfires. Their grazing helps to control invasive species. Their presence will promote endemic biodiversity. These large grazers will create natural firebreaks. They open up forested areas. More light reaches the ground. Grass replaces scrub. This enhances biodiversity. It improves carbon capture. The bison are closely monitored. It’s a learning process for the Rewilding Portugal team. They’re receiving training in bison management.
