In 1821, Mokoia/Mauinaina fell silent. The vibrant energy of Ngāti Paoa was extinguished by the northern invaders. Imagine Mokoia/Mauinaina, once the largest Māori community in New Zealand, bustling with life. The fertile lands and abundant fishing of the Tamaki Estuary and Panmure Basin provided sustenance. The strategic location allowed rapid canoe access to the Waitematā Harbour, Hauraki Gulf, and even the Manukau Harbour via the Tamaki River portage. Mokoia/Mauinaina wasn’t just a settlement. It was the heart of Ngāti Paoa, encompassing two significant pā: Mokoia and Mauinaina. These pā stood as guardians of the land, testaments to the deep connection between the people and their ancestral home. This area, nestled between the Tamaki River and Maungarei (Mount Wellington), thrived. Good garden land, swamps, lakes, marine resources, and fresh water springs were abundant. This made Mokoia/Mauinaina highly valued. The year 1821 marked a tragic turning point. Hongi Hika and his northern warriors, armed with European weapons, descended upon Mokoia/Mauinaina. The attack decimated the Ngāti Paoa population. A thousand lives were lost. The land was abandoned, slowly reclaimed by fern and manuka. The vibrant heart of Ngāti Paoa ceased to beat. The memory of this tragic event serves as a poignant reminder of the turbulent history of Mokoia/Mauinaina. The silence of the pā speaks volumes. It echoes the loss of a thriving community and the resilience of a people who, despite this devastating blow, continue to honor their heritage.
