Picture a suburb where the aroma of souvlaki mingles with the scent of oak trees. This is Oakleigh. It is a place where Greek heritage thrives. It blends seamlessly with modern Australian life.

Oakleigh. The name itself sparks curiosity. Where does it come from? Local historians offer possibilities. Maybe from the she-oaks that once graced Scotchmans Creek. Perhaps from “Oakleigh Park” in England. Or maybe from Mrs. Oakley, an early settler. The true origin remains a charming mystery.

Originally, the Kulin people called this land home. In the 1840s, Scottish settlers like the McMillan brothers established grazing runs. It became known as Scotchman’s Creek Run. By 1853, the area transformed. It gained the name South Yarra Creek. This was due to the South Yarra Pound and Inn nearby.

The year 1871 marked a turning point. The Shire of Oakleigh was created. The Melbourne-Oakleigh railway arrived in 1877. This sparked a boom. Oakleigh became a crucial hub near Melbourne. Industries flourished. Railway workshops, brickworks and market gardens defined the landscape. Oakleigh bricks supplied 20% of Melbourne’s needs.

Evidence of Oakleigh’s past grandeur remains. Look around. The Oakleigh Hall stands. It served as the town hall, post office and courthouse. The Sacred Heart Church’s copper dome is still a landmark.

Oakleigh grew. Hughesdale became part of Oakleigh in 1913. In 1924, Oakleigh became a town. By 1927, it was a city. Housing extended towards Huntingdale. After the war, these areas were rising suburbs.

Golf enthusiasts take note. Oakleigh South was home to Sand Belt golf courses. These included Metropolitan, Commonwealth and Huntingdale Golf Clubs. The sandy, flat land was perfect for fairways.

The Convent of the Good Shepherd once stood here. It was demolished in 1984. This made way for Chadstone Shopping Centre expansions. Chadstone opened in 1960. It was built on land leased from the Good Shepherd Sisters.

Oakleigh’s Central Business District is a bustling hub. Atherton Road is the historic main street. Drummond Street was once the civic spine. Eaton Street is a pedestrian mall. It connects Atherton Road to the Centro Shopping Centre and railway station.

Oakleigh’s Greek heritage is undeniable. Many Greek immigrants arrived in the mid-20th century. Today, 13% of residents speak Greek at home. Evidence of this influence can be found everywhere. The Oakleigh Cannons football club is a testament to this heritage.

Oakleigh offers a blend of experiences. Enjoy the many cafes. Explore the restaurants and retail shops. Discover Greek themed laneways. Savour a cafe frappe. Oakleigh is a place where history and culture intertwine. It creates a unique Melbourne experience. Oakleigh’s story continues to evolve. It invites you to be a part of its vibrant present.
