Did you know that this very spot has hosted some of the greatest cricketing legends from India, Pakistan, and Ceylon? Right here, standing before you, is The Indian Gymkhana Club, a place steeped in history, sporting prowess, and cultural significance. Established in 1916, this club began as a cricket club before becoming a multi-sports complex. Its rich history, however, begins in 1916, when the club played its first match, on June 2nd, against an Australian team. It was none other than M. P. Banjana who achieved a century against the Aussies, while C. H. Gunasekra, another County cricketer, pulled off a hat trick. The club has also been known as a hotbed for cricketing talent, with many prominent players from India, Pakistan, and Ceylon having graced its grounds. Among them are the Maharaja of Visianagram, Vijay Merchant, Nazir Ali, the legendary Jahangir Khan, and the great Sunil Gavaskar. Even Rohan Kanhai, along with Sonny Ramadhin and Valentine, joined the club when their team visited Britain in 1952. Today, The Indian Gymkhana Club continues to be a vibrant center for sports, boasting teams in cricket, hockey, and football. But it’s more than just a sporting club – it’s a community hub where people of all backgrounds can connect, share their love for sport, and celebrate their heritage.
