Here at Faculdade de Educação da Baixada Fluminense FEBF UERJ Duque de Caxias a story of transformation unfolds. This institution began as the Instituto de Educação Governador Roberto Silveira IEGRS. It was a school of reference for teacher formation in the Baixada Fluminense region during the 1960s.
The winds of change blew strong. Educational reforms in 1968 and 1971 reshaped the IEGRS role. The fusion of Rio de Janeiro and Guanabara states in 1974 further impacted the institute. In 1966 the institute started a Teacher Formation Course for Normal Education CFPEN. This was authorized by the State Council of Education-RJ. In 1971 the CFPEN became the Pedagogy Course. The diplomas were endorsed by the Universidade Federal Fluminense UFF.
After the fusion in 1975 the Pedagogy Course separated from UFF. It remained linked to the State Department of Education. Only in 1982 was the Pedagogy Course incorporated into UERJ. It became subordinate to its Faculty of Education. The course was tied to its curriculum and direct coordination.
To preserve autonomy in its formative activities the Faculdade de Educação da Baixada Fluminense FEBF was created in 1988. This happened through Resolution 548/88. From 1982 to 1998 the FEBF continued to function precariously in the Institute of Education.
After many demands the FEBF moved permanently to CIEP-090 in the Vila São Luiz neighborhood in 1998. This was due to agreements between the State of Rio de Janeiro and the Municipality of Duque de Caxias. This transfer made new forms of work possible. It enabled the creation of new Bachelor’s courses. It helped develop a reference project in teacher training in the Baixada Fluminense.
Now FEBF UERJ is expanding. It intends to acquire the building where the Faculdade de Duque de Caxias formerly operated. This is the old Colégio São José on Rua Pedro Correia 370 in Vila Meriti. The location is privileged near the city’s bus terminal and train station.
The new location will house 28 classrooms six laboratories an auditorium a library a theater and a cafeteria. The goal is to accommodate new courses in History and Cinema. It will also serve existing courses. This expansion aligns with FEBF’s historical moment and its expanding pedagogical project. The two new courses are a long-standing demand from the Duque de Caxias community.
The idea is to bring UERJ to the heart of Baixada Fluminense through FEBF. This continues the policy of interiorization in the State of Rio de Janeiro. It helps improve people’s lives by bringing quality free and inclusive education.
The FEBF Faculdade de Educação da Baixada Fluminense is founded on the three pillars of the university. These are Teaching Research and Extension. Through these it is possible to train educators with excellence. It also helps produce scientific knowledge. It promotes integration with the community. This strengthens its mission as an educational institution in Baixada Fluminense.
The Laboratory of Geography of Baixada Fluminense LabGeo Baixada Fluminense is a research center on the FEBF UERJ campus. It was created in 2005. Its mission is to develop research extension work and monitoring in Geography. It also works in related areas of knowledge. LabGeo connects theory and practice through projects. It aims to contribute to the profession of teacher and researcher in Geography.
